The Cactus Garden
The Cactus Garden - Latest creation by César Manrique
Where anyone would have seen an inert and completely arid space without any possibility, César Manrique saw an opportunity to improve the orography of the landscape of Lanzarote, where he concluded his last great work with the creation of the Cactus Garden. Located in Guatiza, Teguise in the area of tuneras and a historical place of cultivation of the cochineal, one of the main assets of the economy in the history of Lanzarote and that keeps a great tradition.
The fact is that this space was inaugurated in 1990, after starting its project a few decades earlier, is the place where 450 different species of cactus live, adding up to a total of 4500 specimens from all continents of the world. The greenish landscape of the cactus has a great contrast with the intense blue that normally prevails in the sky of Lanzarote, leaving a really amazing impression.
The Cactus Garden has emerged as one of the most interesting places for visitors to Lanzarote for many reasons: To see first-hand the seal and mark of César Manrique in an arid space like this or to see a cactus congregation of this magnitude, with such different species from all over the world. The fact is that for many visitors who have already passed through the Cactus Garden, this is one of the must-sees on your holiday in Lanzarote.
Another outstanding space within the Cactus Garden is the presence of one of the mills of "millo" (corn) of the island, which is still active today. It is also a good opportunity to visit and see how a traditional mill works in Lanzarote.
