The historic neighborhood of Vegueta:    

This is the neighbourhood that gave rise to the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and was the first location of the Crown of Castile in 1478, rising as the centre of life in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; and centuries later, it was declared a National Historic and Artistic Site in 1973.

With a rich heritage, its narrow streets and buildings take all visitors back centuries.  Here you can witness not only Canarian but also Spanish history, discovering its evolution until it became what it is today: the epicentre of culture and leisure in the capital.

Among the most outstanding corners of the Vegueta neighbourhood we recommend you to visit:

• Plaza San Antonio Abad, the place where Columbus prayed on one of the stops in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
• Casa de Colón, this is one of the must-see visits in your travel plan. It is not a house where Columbus really lived, but rather a project initiated by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria to create a museum dedicated to the visits of the famous colonizer.
• Santa Ana Square. It is considered the main square of the city, because in its surroundings it houses a concentrated number of government and church buildings among which is the Basilica of Santa Ana (named in 1894)
• Basilica de Santa Ana (Cathedral): built in the sixteenth century was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument and is considered the most important monument of religious architecture in the Canary Islands.
• Canarian Museum. If you want to immerse yourself in the history of the first settlers of the Canary Islands, you must visit the Canarian Museum. In this place, located in the Vegueta district, you will find the largest ethnographic collection dedicated to the ancient Canarian aborigines.
• Vegueta Market. Founded in 1787, it is located on the avenue that links the neighbourhoods of Vegueta and Triana, opposite the Pérez Galdós Theatre.
