Ajuy Caves
It's no longer a secret that Fuerteventura hides much more than miles of paradise of turquoise waters and golden sand; that it's filled with unspoiled and natural spaces worth seeing. Ajuy and its caves, in the Natural Monument of Ajuy, is one of the greatest examples of this, one of the must-see places on your holidays in Fuerteventura.
Where are the Caves?
Ajuy Caves are located within Betancuria Rural Park in the small fishing village of Ajuy which has around 150 inhabitants, less than 10 kilometres from the town of Pájara. The volcanic origin of the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura has produced formations such as the Ajuy caves, leaving a spectacular picture in a coastal and beach environment such as Ajuy beach. This is a great plan for your holidays in Fuerteventura, enjoying the two great attractions of the island, the spectacular beaches and the richness of its natural areas.
Ajuy Caves tour:
The first thing you find when you arrive is Ajuy Viewpoint: a perfect place to take incredible pictures of all the landscape, the perfect combination of the white houses of the village with the black sand of its beach. It should be noted that the town of Ajuy is commonly known as "Puerto de Peña" and its beach as "La playa de los muertos" (the beach of the dead) because in the past it was there where, due to the sea currents, many drowning bodies ended up in the sea.
The next important stop before reaching the Caves of Ajuy are the two lime kilns in the middle of the road, where the majoreros used to make the materials for the houses, and which were so important in the mercantile trade of the island many years ago.
Finally you arrive at the Caves through some stairs that will take you there, and from here you will only have to let yourself go and your only preoccupation will be to enjoy this unique place. Don't miss the chance to enjoy one of the best sunsets in the world, the one you can contemplate there in Ajuy. In addition, it is important to note that Ajuy beach has been called by some of the most renowned meta-searchers as one of the best black sand beaches.
